The many different characters with long detailed histories was confusing and made it hard to get into, as well as the fact that there are almost all male characters, however once I got into the story it became quite compelling. This book is about corruption in Egypt, so of course is very relevant. The author actually worked for the former president Mubarak and has an insider view of what goes on with the rich and powerful in his country. My main critique is the few and stereotypical female characters in the book. There is Ghada the "good girl", Aya the protagonists weak sister who marries a fundamentalist and Sally, the dancer who, no surprise here for anyone who is aware of the status of dancers in the Middle East, is a greedy, scheming prostitute.
